Brazil’s no. 9 has proven himself by scoring twice to give Brazil a convincing start in the FIFA World Cup over Serbia on the 25th of November at the Lusail Stadium. The five-time champions have entered the tournament as a favourite, with the highest-ever-paid Neymar striker on their side. But Tottenham Hotspur’s forward Richarlison de Andrade stole all the limelight with a brace in the last half, comprising an overhead scissor shot.
After the 2-0 victory over Serbia, they are now leading group G. For the record, Brazil had lost only once in the group stages, that was against Norway in 1998.
For Serbia, it’s their fourth appearance in the tournament. But in the nine World Cup matches, they have lost seven, the highest among the European nations. Contrary to that, Brazil maintains an outstanding winning percentage of 67% (73 wins out of a total of 109 matches). The two countries have met face-to-face twice before, with the Brazilian side dominating both the games (2-0 in the group stage of WorldCup 2018 and 1-0 in the friendly encounter of 2014).
Thiago Silva debuted in this World Cup as the oldest player at 38 years and 63 days.
In the first half, the contest was toned down somehow. Both teams were struggling to get off the mark. Little Canary created some chances through the winger Vinicius and Raphinha but in vain. In the second half, the Brazilian side pushed the opposition quite a bit; noticeably, Alex Sandro’s long shot from about 30 yards was denied by the crossbar.
In the 62nd minute, Brazilian fans sighed in relief when Richarlison sent the ball to the opposition’s net, hitting the rebound from Vinicius’s shot. In the 73rd minute, the acrobatic bicycle kick by the striker gave the team a comfortable 2-0 lead. Throughout the match, Neymar was fouled nine times, and in the 80th minute, he was replaced by Antony.
The severity of Neymar’s ankle pain wasn’t something to be taken lightly. He seemed to be in serious pain when Antony replaced him. And finally, coach Tite announced that Neymar would not play the group stage matches anymore as it could worsen the injury.
But if everything goes well, we can expect him back on the pitch by the playoffs. He will miss the Brazilian squad against Switzerland on the 28th of November and against Cameroon on the 3rd of December.
