Qatar Stadium
As the FIFA World Cup is knocking on the door, the Gulf country has much to prove. Qatar is the first among the Arab countries to win the bid for hosting the tournament.
The government has set to spend a whopping $200 billion, making it the costliest World Cup ever. The budget is around twenty times higher than the tournament’s last edition.
New hotels, residences and sewage systems are rebuilt to welcome more than 1 million football fans. Eight stadiums across five cities will organize 64 matches during the event.
The tournament kicks off on November 20 and will last till December 18. All the stadiums fall under a 55 km radius of Doha, the capital of Qatar. Let’s tour the venues of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Lusail Stadium
Situated in Lusail city, 20 km north of Doha, it will host the final for its massive capacity of eighty thousand. The construction started in 2017 and finished in 2021. The stadium’s design replicates the handmade bowls found throughout the Arabian civilization.
Al-Bayt Stadium
It is the second-largest stadium in the country, located in the city of Al Khor. The construction was initiated in 2014 and took seven long years to finish. The tent-like structure, inspired by Qatar’s nomadic people, the Bayt Al sha’at, is equipped with modern tech and facilities.
Education City Stadium
Built in 2020, it is called the most environmentally-friendly stadium ever constructed. The stadium can host 45,320 people at a time.
Khalifa International Stadium
Named after Khalifa bin Hamed Al Thani, Qatar’s former Emir, it is one of the oldest grounds in the country. It was renovated between 2014 to 2017 to host 40,000 spectators.
Stadium 974
The stadium is made from 974 containers. The construction began in 2018 and finished after three years. The total capacity is 40,000. Surprisingly, the stadium will be broken down after the World Cup.
Al Thumma Stadium
It is located in Doha. With a 40,000 capacity, the stadium was inaugurated in 2021. The ground will host a quarterfinal match.
Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium
Situated in the historic city of Umm Al Afaei, the stadium is a tribute to the past Emir Ahmad bin Ali Al Thani. With a seating capacity of 40,000, the ground is placed at the edge of the desert.
Al Janoub Stadium
Traditional Dhow boat-inspired stadium can accommodate 40,000 visitors at a time. It was inaugurated in 2019. The ground is located in the heart of Al Wakrah.
