Kohli's 73rd-ton Guides India to Victory in First ODI against Sri Lanka | News Article by The Handicapperchic.com width=

India played an outstanding game of 373 for 7, with Kohli’s 73rd international story guiding the team towards a remarkable win by 67 runs against Sri Lanka.

The only time Sri Lanka seemed like settling on the pitch was when Dhananjaya De Silva and Pathum Nissanka managed a 72 runs partnership of 65.

In the last ten overs, Dasan Shanaka’s impressive performance enabled him to reach a century. Otherwise, the Sri Lankan team was miserable.

The 45th ODI ton of Kohli helped the Blues to initiate a relationship with a ton.

A great opening partnership between Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma carved out the path for a big score. Then Kohli outperformed Lankan bowlers to 373.

For Sri Lanka to chase such a huge score, tremendous innings were highly required. But Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka, and Dasun Shanaka put up a decent fight but in vain.

First, they were at 23 for 2; then they slipped to 64 for 3. However, Sri Lanka didn’t give up easily as they pushed the scoreboard to 306 for 8, with Shanaka’s magnificent century entertaining the crowd.

Out of 8 wickets, Indian seamers grabbed seven. The speedster Umran Malik knocked out the most wickets with 3 for 57. Indian batters had a great evening on the pitch. Gill, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli smashed 70 off 60, 83 off 67 and 113 off 87, respectively, to turn the game in their favour.

Even in the middle order, Shreyas Iyer and K L Rahul hold good to keep the runs coming steadily.

Spectators expected India to cross 400 while batting. But Sri Lankan bowlers Chamika Karunaratne and Kasun Rajitha ceased the Indian batter at the death overs, and India landed on the 373 mark.

On this occasion, Virat Kohli sliced consecutive ODI tons to achieve his 45th ODI century against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. It also implies his 73rd International hundred in all formats.

With the record, Kohli levelled Tendulkar’s record of twenty ODI centuries at home ground. Tendulkar took 164 matches to reach the number, whereas Kohli attained the record in 101 games.

Also, Kohli now has more tons than Tendulkar had against Sri Lanka. Tendulkar had eight, and Kohli now has nine centuries against the Lankans. Kohli concluded his ODI century drought against Bangladesh after 1214 days of century-lessness earlier.

Now Sri Lanka will try to balance the series at Eden Gardens on the 12th of January in the second game of the three-match ODI series. Can Sri Lanka make a comeback? Only time will tell.
